Oil Law must be modified, suggests Casagrande

Senator Renato Casagrande (PSB-ES)

Senator Renato Casagrande (PSB-ES), said, on Tuesday (12), that the new reality in oil exploration, that begun after recent discoveries of fields in the pre-salt area, will demand changes in the laws and regulations of that activity, in order to benefit Brazilian citizens with future revenues.

During his speech, Casagrande celebrated the beginning of pre-salt exploration in the coast of Espírito Santo state and said that future revenues should be used in strategic programs that would favor the country’s development.

- To better use these revenues we must modify the law – said Casagrande, referring to the current regulatory framework of that field, which broke the monopoly of Petrobras and established public tenders, with the presence of private companies.

Casagrande reminded that some are still defending the creation of a state company to control the exploration of pre-salt reserves, while others are demanding a rise in royalties.

- In case we earn more using public companies, we may study the case. But, if we must raise royalties, we should consider doing it. But, effectively, we must modify the legislation, so that citizens can enjoy the profits of oil – said the senator.
