Mercadante criticizes European actions against immigrants

Senator Aloizio Mercadante (PT-SP)

Senator Aloizio Mercadante (PT-SP) presented a request of censure vote against the European Parliament and the Spanish government for the decisions taken against immigrants. The European Parliament approved, on Wednesday (18) a bill that determines as much as 18 months of prison and the expulsion of illegal immigrants. The Spanish government, on the other hand, intends to create mechanisms to remove Brazilian immigrants from the country, even legal ones.

- The European Union is an example of diplomatic integration progress that is beyond commercial and economic interests. They intend to integrate the rules for both labor market and migration. It would be a step back not to consider illegal immigrants as part of a social and diplomatic problem. They cannot criminalize immigrants as they are doing now- said the senator.

About the position of the Spanish government, Mercadante reminded that Spain sent  almost 800 thousand immigrants to Brazil, who were welcomed by the Brazilian society and the State.

Senators Arthur Virgílio (PSDB-AM) and Inácio Arruda (PCdoB-CE) joined the request. Arruda reminded that the decision of the European Parliament was criticized even inside the European Union. Arthur Virgílio said that Europe should promote structural reforms, defining the best way to include immigrant workers, and not to exclude them.
