Lugo’s election is a victory of democracy in Paraguay, says Ideli

Senator Ideli Salvatti (PT-SC)

The leader of the government at the Senate, Ideli Salvatti (PT-SC), said that Fernando Lugo's election as president of Paraguay will represent an “invigoration of democracy, an effective redemocratization." The senator observed that Lugo’s victory ends six decades of exclusive domain of Partido Colorado in the political power. Besides greeting the elected president, Ideli congratulated Paraguayan people for the choice.

The senator also complimented Lugo’s declaration signalizing the beginning of a period in which Paraguay will be recognized for the qualities of its people and its potential as a country, no more for corruption. Soon afterwards, Ideli spoke about recent news in which the new Paraguayan president expressed his wishes to review the treaty between Brazil and Paraguay regarding the Itaipu Binacional Power Plant.

According to Ideli Salvati, the Treaty of Itaipu assures benefits to both countries, with division of responsibilities and contribution of resources. Thus, renegotiating the treaty could risk the enterprise and make it not viable in the future. The senator guaranteed that the Brazilian government already granted benefits to Paraguay, making the cost of energy cheaper.
