A group of Brazilian senators will participate in the World Peace Conference, which will be held in Caracas, Venezuela, from the 8th to the 13th of April. The decision was taken on Thursday (27) by the Committee on Human Rights and Legislative Participation (CDH), which approved a petition, with this goal, presented by senator Inácio Arruda (PCdoB-CE).
The petition was approved during a public hearing that happened in the meeting, which discussed the subject "The Fight for Peace and the Defense of the Sovereignty of Nations”. Arruda reminded that the participation of senators, including members of CDH, will be very important not only for Brazil, but also for Mercosul.
The World Peace Conference is organized by the World Peace Council in Caracas and, this year, there will be four main themes to debate: “The Militarization of International Relations", "Strategies of Nations in the Fight for Peace", "The Fight for Peace and Human Rights" and "The Fight for Development and Against Imperialism"
Sovereignty
“In times of globalization, peace is linked to national sovereignty, development and self-determination". This statement was made during the public hearing by the director of the Brazilian Center for Solidarity and Peace (Cebrapaz), Rubens Diniz.
According to him, war only fits the interests of great powers, and intends only to preserve the status quo in developing countries.
- But that hegemony of the big powers has been rebuffed, and revealed as a strategy to conserve power and steal the strategic and natural resources of developing countries - said Rubens Diniz.
The director defended a pacific solution for the conflict between Colombia and Ecuador – the crisis was started after the deaths of Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (Farc) rebels, killed during a raid of Colombian military into Ecuador, in the beginning of March.
- Cebrapaz believes this conflict calls for the creation of a South American Defense Council, as proposed by the Brazilian government. It also calls for an invigoration of Mercosul, in order to fight these aggressions and wars - said Rubens Diniz.
According to Arruda, who presided the meeting, the search for peace is an obligation of everybody.
- World peace depends on firm and sober actions of all governors. It is a search of people’s union, so that we can believe in peace - affirmed the senator.
