Fiesp is against legal goals for reduction of greenhouse gases

Climate Change of the National Congress

The Federation of the Industries of Sao Paulo State (Fiesp) is against setting legal goals for the reduction of emissions of gases that aggravate greenhouse effect. This statement was made by Nelson Pereira dos Reis, director of the Environmental Department of Fiesp , on Monday (17) , in an hearing promoted by the Special Joint Committee on Climate Change of the National Congress, in São Paulo.

- The goals should be motivated in a voluntary form and through a policy, instead of a law - he said.

Nelson Pereira dos Reis, as well as the committee rapporteur, senator Renato Casagrande (PSB-ES), argue that the imposition of legal goals could harm the development of national carbon credit market, still incipient.

As an alternative, Casagrande defended the adoption of sectorial goals in the country. He mentioned, as example, the definition of specific goals for the reduction of emissions in the metallurgy section and in aluminum industry, besides goals for deforestation decrease. Senator also emphasized, as well as Fiesp director, that these goals could be defined in a national policy.

Casagrande reminded that, in Brazil, 75% of gases emissions that worsen greenhouse effect are provoked by deforestations and burnings, mainly in the Amazon. This situation, he stressed, is the inverse of what happens in the planet as a whole, because fossil fuels burnings is the main cause of temperature increase in global extent.
