Electric sector may increase the emission of gases, Pinguelli warns

The secretary-executive of the Brazilian Forum of Climate Change, Luiz Pinguelli Rosa

Brazilian emissions of gases that produce the greenhouse effect will increase during the next years because of the option for thermoelectric plants, instead of hydroelectric power stations. The alert was made on Thursday (23) by the secretary-executive of the Brazilian Forum of Climate Change, Luiz Pinguelli Rosa, during a public hearing of the Special Joint Committee on Climate Change accomplished at the auditorium of the Coordination of the Programs of Post-Graduation in Engineering (Coppe) of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

- Brazil is going the wrong way in the environmental sector, because it is leaving hydroelectric power stations for worse things. That is the result of the last auctions of energy, once the market acts blindly and that, on environmental terms, is not very good - Pinguelli Rosa said, during the hearing that was presided by deputy Sarney Filho (PV-MA). The president of the committee, deputy Eduardo Gomes (PSDB-TO), and deputies Augusto Carvalho (PPS-DF) and Dr. Adilson Soares (PR-RJ) were also present.
