Brazil will hold its 29th Republican election
The Republic of Brazil will hold this year its 29th presidential election, but elections have been made since the country was a colony, as local leaders used to choose their delegates. The first election at that time took place in 1532 and was carried on in order to elect members of São Vicente Village Council, in São Paulo state.
Women and Youngsters outstand in 2006 elector’s profile
Women and youngsters are the majority of electors who are going to vote on October 1st. The pool was carried on by Superior Electoral Court (TSE). From 125.913.479 electors entitled to voting, 64.882.283 are women, about 51, 53% of voters’ total number. Young voters’ ages range from 25 to 34 years-old and they are 23, 96% of electors’ total (30. 127.037 voters).
Marco Maciel suggests political reform should be discussed after elections
On Thursday (14), senator Marco Maciel (PFL-PE) suggested on the Plenary that the National Congress should decide right after the elections over the schedule for institutional reforms, especially political, before new legislative session starts on February 15th 2007. He believes Brazil should learn from the political crisis and carry on with reforms which may lead the country to a rather fair economic growth.
Committee debates opening of new parliament
The installation schedule of Mercosul’s Parliament, which had its creation approved by Brazilian National Congress, will be discussed in a meeting of Mercosul Joint Parliamentary Committee (CPCM) director’s board. This meeting is expected to take place during the first week of October in Montevideo. Items such as the new body’s location, which will have the Uruguayan capital as headquarters, and a draft for inner rules to be adopted, will be discussed.
Sibá Machado praises environmental license for building of hydroelectric power plants
Senator Sibá Machado (PT-AC) praised on Tuesday (12) the approval given by Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) for Environmental Impact Studies and the Report on Environmental Impact (EIA-Rima) regarding Madeira river power plants in Rondônia state.
